Monazite
(Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO₄ · phosphate
Monazite is the rare-earth mineral at Orión — a minor component of the heavy-mineral assemblage by percentage, and the one Osmond has taken to a preliminary concentrate alongside zircon.

Why it matters
As general mineralogy, not an Osmond figure, monazite is a light-rare-earth phosphate that also contains thorium — so a monazite grade is read together with what the concentrate assays into, not on the mineral percentage alone.
Osmond has reported both at Orión. On a mass-balance head basis dated 19 February 2026, bulk channel samples returned 1.56–1.62% monazite, with total rare-earth oxides of 1.07–1.18%. Separately, on 3 March 2026, preliminary testwork produced a monazite concentrate grading 19.4% TREO (excluding yttrium), including 25% MREO, at approximately 76% recovery. The mineral percentages and the head TREO are grades for those channel samples; the same 19 February 2026 samples carry total heavy minerals of 29.4–32.8%, with up to roughly 40% estimated in the AV-01bis interval.
Two qualifications travel with the figures. The concentrate is preliminary testwork, and its 19.4% TREO excludes yttrium — a basis to carry with the number rather than drop. The mineral percentages themselves are mass-balance estimates calculated from oxide assays rather than directly measured.
Quantified in the bulk channel samples as a mass-balance head estimate, with a head TREO grade, and carried to a preliminary concentrate reported excluding yttrium; no deposit-wide grade.
Used for
- 01Permanent magnets — NdFeB for electric-vehicle traction motors and wind-turbine generators.
- 02Light rare earths — neodymium and praseodymium.
- 03Rare-earth feedstock — a phosphate at the start of the magnet supply chain.
