Supply chains do not perform themselves. Every step described elsewhere on this site is carried out by an organisation with a name, an owner, a set of obligations and an interest of its own, and this pillar is about those organisations and the different kinds of thing they are.

The grouping earns its place because the category "the industry" hides most of what a reader needs. A company that sells mineral concentrate and one that converts concentrate into pigment are in different businesses with different customers, different capital cycles and different exposure to the same event. A listed explorer must disclose results on a schedule; a state-held processor need not, and the asymmetry between them shapes how much of this subject can be known at all. Nor is the industry only companies. Government agencies collect the data everyone else argues over, industry associations write the standards and definitions that reporting depends on, and research institutes develop the processes that reach production a decade later. Equipment and technology suppliers sit across the whole chain, often knowing more about how an operation runs than any single operator does.

For minerals like these, the organisational map is part of the material story. The separation of hafnium, the making of titanium metal and the splitting of the rare earths are each performed by a handful of firms, which is why a subject that begins in mineralogy so often ends in a question about corporate structure and ownership.
